The Best Tips to Keep Your Money Safe While Travelling

One of the most exhilarating things you can do in life is go travelling, but amid the whirlwind and exciting preparations, it can be all too easy to forget the basics, like keeping your money safe. With this in mind, we have compiled a list of the best ways to keep your money secure while you travel. So, lets jump right in.

Have a Secret Stash

It’s tempting to place all of your money in one place for ease of use when travelling but you run the risk of losing all of it; or even worse, having it stolen. Keep separate amounts of cash hidden in different places in your luggage and on your person so if the worst happens, you always have a backup stash.

Utilise Technology

Having your bank accounts set up within in app on your phone is the fastest way to have your details on hand and freeze your cards quickly if they get lost or stolen. As a side note, always remember to keep your devices password protected to avoid someone being able to access your accounts if they get hold of your phone.

Stay Organised

Withdrawing a set amount of cash from an ATM each day is the best way to avoid loss or theft and has the added bonus of stopping you getting carried away and overspending. If your bank doesn’t charge ATM fees, the exchange rates you get through withdrawing your cash from a bank machine in a different country often work out cheaper than using a currency converter service. Don’t forget to keep your wits about you when withdrawing cash from an ATM in an unfamiliar place.

Purchase a Money Belt and a Contactless Card Protector

A money belt is an effective and safe way to keep your money close to you and out of sight. They are small and discreet and often look like a regular belt but with hidden pockets. If you are using your card while you travel and you have a contactless payment card, consider purchasing a contactless card protector; they are widely available, cheap and prevent the risk of someone getting close to you and using a device to steal your card details.

Protect Your Assets

If you decide to leave valuable assets such as cash, cards, documents or your passport behind in your hotel room, be sure to make use of a safe or ask the hotel if they have one. You will naturally become relaxed when you are in the holiday spirit and while most people who will visit your room are trusted professionals, it’s not worth leaving it to chance.

Don’t Flash the Cash

A fairly obvious one but when you are on the road and juggling your belongings, removing a wad of cash as you look for the correct money is common. If a thief happened to be watching, it makes you a prime target. Keep your money hidden and consider only travelling with the amount you need to get you through the day.
